Denuvo DRM server issues temporarily made several games unplayable

Controversial anti-pirate DRM software Denuvo has left a number of games, including Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2, unplayable due to server issues.

Denuvo continues to be anti-piracy software that developers and publishers rely on and also the most controversial of the bunch. There is no shortage of stories regarding the problems with Denuvo DRM and its effects on video game performance. Sadly, this past weekend only fueled that fire, as major server issues at Denuvo made several DRM-protected games unplayable.

Users took to a ResetEra thread on Sunday, November 7, 2021, claiming they could not access games such as Football Manager 2022 and recently released Guardians of the Galaxy. Wolfenstein Youngblood, Planet Zoo, the recent Tomb Raider trilogy, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, Mortal Kombat 11 and Total War Warhammer were also among the games believed to be affected, as reported by Video Games Chronicle. The common thread running through all of these games is that they have Denuvo DRM anti-piracy protection, an issue that internet detectives say caused the problem when it looks like the Denuvo company may have. let a server domain expire.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was one of several games that remained unplayable due to an apparent Denuvo DRM server issue.

Later on Sunday, the developers of Football Manager 2022 took to the game’s Steam forum with the update stating that the issue had apparently been resolved. Unfortunately, it continues to be a trust erosion issue that makes developers question whether Denuvo’s protections are worth it and users go wild when these issues arise. Earlier this year, the PC version of Resident Evil Village was plagued by issues caused by Denuvo which essentially checked to see if the game was hacked every time players shot a gun – annoying in most cases and making it the game almost unplayable when it came to automatic weapons. Rage 2 was also a standout game that ended up removing Denuvo DRM from its PC version for the issues it was causing.

The idea that if Denuvo servers go down it could make single player experiences like Guardians of the Galaxy unplayable is probably not an idea that will appeal to gamers. Sadly, that’s another story to add to the pile in terms of the outcry over a new game struggling with Denuvo DRM.
