The inability to stop the race has been the main theme of the New York Jets defense this season.

Teams know they can effectively use their ground game against them, so they beat the ball over and over again – daring the Jets to stop them.

So when Duke Johnson – Miami’s fourth string running back – beat New York for a career-high 107 yards and two touchdowns in the Dolphins’ 31-24 win on Sunday, it was just one another embarrassing performance to add to the growing 3 -11 Jets list.

“We just can’t allow this leakage in yards,” defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins said on Monday. “In addition, there weren’t enough negative games (in meters). We have to be able to keep teams in situations behind the sticks, to create negative tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

“When you are unable to do that throughout the game and allow teams to consistently gain yards, eventually they will gain one.”

Like Myles Gaskin’s 30-yard run that helped set up the touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

“They’ve been able to pick up the pace of their racing game,” said Rankins, “and we just need to be better collectively in a few areas.”

The Dolphins finished with 183 rushing yards against the Jets, who allowed New Orleans 203 yards in their previous game and 185 to a battered Philadelphia team before that.

The inability to stop the race – the New York defense entered the NFL’s 29th overall on the weekend – allowed opponents to maintain long runs. It also stifled the offense, which lost momentum in the second half after a hot start.

Next up is Jacksonville, who is 2-12 but has a solid running game led by James Robinson. And there’s no doubt the Jaguars and rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence will look to attack the Jets’ defense on Sunday.

“He’s going to try to use this as a chance for himself to improve himself,” Saleh said of the No.1 pick in April. “They have a really good running game and I’m sure they can’t wait to come and race football.”
