What to Know as San Antonio-area High School Sports Teams Prepare for Tournament Season

After an unforgettable fall season that saw Shiner football, Brandeis volleyball and Wimberley tennis emerge as UIL State champions, it’s officially time to turn the page on 2022!

KSAT 12’s Big Game Coverage (BGC) is set to focus on basketball courts, soccer fields, swimming pools and wrestling mats across the town of Alamo for the start of the sporting season of the spring, and the weekly Big Game Coverage newsletter will serve as your guide through a list of action-packed events.

Over the next three months, the state champions will be crowned in women’s and men’s basketball, swimming, diving and wrestling. Let’s detail the upcoming schedule:



Last March, Cole’s boys’ basketball team ended an unforgettable season with the program’s first UIL state title since 1989. Judson’s and Boerne’s teams also ended notable seasons at the Alamodome. with appearances in state tournaments. This year, district races are tightening up across San Antonio with about 40 days remaining in the regular season.

As we head into the playoffs, here’s a rundown of the important dates to remember:

  • FEB. 14-15START OF GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS (bi-district tour)

  • FEB. 17-19 – Round of the GBB area

  • FEB. 21-22 – GBB regional quarter-finals; START OF THE BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS (bi-district tour)

  • FEB. 24-26 – Regional GBB tournament; BBB area round

  • FEB. 28-MARCH 1 – BBB regional quarter-finals

  • 3-5 MARCHGBB STATE TOURNAMENT; BBB regional tournament



As previously announced, KSAT 12 is expanding its partnership with Texas Sports Productions to bring you live broadcasts of basketball games from select regions throughout the regular season and playoffs!

More than 20 local games will air on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays before the playoffs start, and you can follow all the action via computer, phone or TV.




Barring new developments, UIL State Swimming & Diving will return to the pool deck at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Several area swimmers last year won titles in their home states, including the Texas A&M commit and Alamo Heights senior Connor Foote.

Here’s a look at their championship schedule:

  • JAN. 18-20 – UIL District Diving Championships

  • JANUARY 21-29 – UIL District Swimming Championships

  • FEB. 4-5 – UIL Region VII 5A and 6A Championships

  • FEB. 7-9 – STATE OF TAPS

  • FEB. 18-19 – STATE UIL



Last season, the UIL State wrestling tournament was delayed until the end of April, but this year the state meet returns to its conventional placement on the UIL sporting calendar in February. As of 2021, the greater San Antonio area was home to three State Champions: Traeh Haynes of Steele, Darwin Hull of Clemens, and Gianna Moreno of San Marcos. All of them were elders and they certainly left a lasting legacy for the next generation.
