Microsoft reportedly invests more in Chinese video game content

Microsoft is looking to invest more in Chinese video game content, according to a Reuters report that relies on multiple sources. This is partly due to the success of Genshin Impactwhich is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC, iOS and Android.

Sony and Microsoft are considering adding games from Chinese developers to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, the sources say.

Two sources say that Microsoft is “putting together a team to research Chinese games.” Microsoft plans to add games from independent studios by offering big bucks.

Microsoft regretted having forwarded Genshin Impact, according to two people familiar with the subject. The sources Microsoft say soke with miHoYo early in development, however, an agreement has not been reached.

” Pick up Genshin Impact saves Sony a lot of money,” a source said.

Daniel Ahmad, principal analyst at researcher Niko Partners, said in a statement: “Chinese game developers are trying to standardize their development tools, create advanced production processes, invest in very large-scale teams. Ultimately, this gives them a competitive edge in reaching large audiences both in terms of geography and platforms.”

Microsoft recently struck a deal with China’s second-largest game company, NetEase, for the Battle Royale game, Naraka: Bladepoint, to be released on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Game Pass in June this year. The game sold over 10 million units with a price tag of $20.
